The quality of a project stands or falls with the execution of the installation on site. As a provider of high quality fiber cement, Swisspearl is truly committed to supporting customers as much as possible to avoid incorrect installation. Some weeks ago, Swisspearl Technical Advisor Nick Sturm visited the site of the Stony Point High School Auditorium which will be cladded with Swisspearl large size panels. Below, Nick talks about the importance of correct installation, why the customer chose Swisspearl panels and the benefits of a rainscreen cladding system.

Nick Sturm Fit, form, and function are what you find at the new Stony Point High School Auditorium. With an efficient rainscreen system design, high density exterior insulation and Swisspearl panels, the engineered NFPA 285 compliant system will help keep the building cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Working closely with the design team, architect and school system, Swisspearl large format panels were selected for the Stony Point Auditorium because of both durability and performance within the rainscreen system. Swisspearl‘s involvement in the project did not stop there. Throughout the design and build, our technical team evaluated shop drawings, onsite mockup and building installation, making suggestions to ensure a quality installation.

Rainscreen systems are not new to the industry as they have been used effectively for decades throughout the world. Traditional rainscreen design incorporates a partially pressured air cavity that uses 3/4” vertical airflow behind the panels to allow the system to introduce a capillary break. This prevents wicking of moisture into the system, creates a drainage plane that allows any moisture that enters the cavity to be effectively drained safely away and vents off heat by creating a stack effect that generates hundreds if not thousands of air changes per day.

Quality installation is achieved when there are proper tools for fabrication, installer certification and detailed application. Actively participating in the project, our technical team was able to assist in the creation of site specific details particular to the Stony Point High School Auditorium. With the ability to adjust the panels at signage, windows, doors, and other miscellaneous materials, the installer and Swisspearl technical team were able to utilize the performance characteristics of the Swisspearl panel.
